Jon Spencer Blues Explosion poster by Robert Lee

This is another poster by Robert Lee of Methane Studios that I found in the book, The Art of Modern Rock, which is an excellent and extensive collection of gig posters and promotional art for hundreds of bands throughout the world. The noir style pays homage to classic horror film artwork, which is fitting, because this particular tour was supporting the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion‘s album Plastic Fang. This tongue-in-cheek representation of a vampiric female expresses the latent sexuality found in many of the band’s lyrics as well as a gritty and raw attitude that the band delivers through their sound. The typography is bold and has a handmade or collage quality to it, and is clearly influenced by the work of Saul Bass and his movie posters. The texture of this piece, one that feels as though this poster had been made decades ago, lends a vintage feel to this work adding a sense of age and history that resonates with me.
